The US Senate's 10% tax on indoor tanning is a small piece of the new healthcare reform package, currently in reconciliation phase between the House and Senate. It stems from the proposed 5% tax on cosmetic procedures that was in their health care reform bill. The indoor tanning tax follows a "health-based" theme. The government is targeting a service linked to skin cancer and a culprit to increasing health care costs. Lawmakers like to say this tax will help deter people from -->
a behavior that is detrimental to their health while raising tax revenue in the present. Sound familiar...smokers, drinkers? The indoor tanning tax has raised concern among tanning salons and spa owners. Some will have to pass the tax onto the consumer while others may be able to foot the increase in hopes of keeping and attracting more customers. For some, tanning is surely addictive and while the government may want us to believe they are looking out for our best interest, most aren't so naive. It may, however, (and I hope it does) help raise awareness that frequenting the indoor or outdoor tanning bed really can have detrimental effects. I would have preferred to see both the 5% tax on cosmetic procedures and the 10% tax on indoor tanning services. While I feel health care reform is needed, I haven't been pleased with the direction it has gone thus far. The government is protecting big businesses (as usual) by not imposing tax on Botox or facelifts. The small business and consumer will be most affected by the proposed tanning tax to aid in funding reform. This won't bring nearly as much tax revenue as the tax on cosmetics would have.I am in favor of the tanning tax. Smokers pay outrageous taxes (and get wrinkles) to counterbalance future health care cost and my Mom always said, "Beauty must suffer" so, welcome aboard indoor tanners! Let's legalize marijuana too. That's where substantial amounts of tax revenue could come from to help with health care cost and reform. Furthermore, marijuana advocates in California are for increasing taxes on medical cannabis.

The small commercial operation and consumer will be many influenced by the due tanning taxation to assist in appropriation reform. This won’t move scarcely as most taxation income as the taxation on war paint would have.I am in preference of the tanning tax. Much as I am concerned about the full body scan at all airports, I can understand why those new rules that I heard about.I can agree to the ones that I heard and can agree with. One of the rules which says that if anyone is traveling to America from a country where terrorist are considered to originate or even through those countries, they will have to submit to a more detailed search before boarding the -->

Now of course, there may be those who will choose to go the way of racial profiling but I think that number of people will be minimal and not the majority. We must be willing to accept that the majority should rule when it comes to the safety of us all and those who are in the minority should accept the majority's decision and then resign themselves to making sure that our civil rights are not stomped on. I say this because many times we spend so much time and energy fighting to set the rules that we often become so divided that instead of moving forward, we move our nation backwards. There has been a lot of decisions made that I do not agree with and would have enjoyed experiencing the other choice but continuing the fight for the other choice does not allow me the opportunity to help give the choice made a proper chance for success. We often times are so pissed that we did not get what we wanted that we spend our ever waking moment trying to make sure the decision fails so that we will feel justified in saying "told you so."Not sure what the other new rules are and if I will be able to agree with them as much as I can with the one mentioned above but I am willing to listen. No one person has all of the answers and having so many thoughtful and smart people in this nation is a blessing that we should take advantage of. Billions and billions of taxpayer dollars spent on bailing out the auto industry (personally I'm tired of hearing and talking about this because it is so upsetting), a $787 billion stimulus package, and a defense bill that costs billions more (I'm for a bill that strengthens our military, but the one put together by Congress is mostly pork). Now the debt level has been raised to over $12 trillion. So, the solution is to tax tanning salons and pay all of that money back with $2.7 billion over 10 years? What a joke. You know, this goes along with the idea of taxing sodas and other soft drinks. Every single thing that a person enjoys is going to be taxed. With all of the problems in the world today, people should be able to enjoy a few things and not have to worry about being taxed for it. People very well know that going to a tanning salon can increase one's risk of cancer (by as much as 75% for people under 30). Even so, it is the person's personal decision to get tanned just like it is a person's personal decision to drink soda. For instance, my aunt has gotten tans her entire life.
When I first heard about the administration closing the American embassy in Yemen, I was quite surprised. I don't think that I had ever heard of this before and had to think about this for some time before understanding why it happened. My understanding is that as we assist the Yemen Government in attacking al-Qaida in Yemen, they would attack us in return. Closing the embassy and moving the Americans out of harms way could allow us to support those attacks even more. Even though closing the embassy does not mean that -->
we are washing our hands of Yemen, it does mean that the terrorist will have to search long and hard for an American target for retaliation and that itself may not be a bad thing.I had heard that the numbers of al-Qaida members were small and that increasing of the sponsored attacks should go a long way in driving them out if not capturing or killing those who are set on doing the same thing to us. My major concern is the time-lapse between discovery of an al-Qaida stronghold where top members are located and the authorization of attack. I have heard some report that by the time authorization for an attack is given; those members have been given the time necessary to leave the area. I would hope that this is not true but if it is, why would we waste time attacking a place where the results would not be worthwhile?

thousands of tanners across the country and many people are questioning the intent of the senateIt is well known that the government likes to tax things that are commonly used in order to get a higher profit. They also like to tax things that are considered unhealthy, in an effort to make people stop doing these things. One example of this that stands out the most is the high tax on cigarettes. Smoking is without a doubt unhealthy. The government likes to tax cigarettes for two purposes. One purpose is to discourage smoking and the other is to gain money. This same thing is occurring with indoor tanning. Indoor tanning is still a new concept that has been known to cause skin damage in people who tan on a daily basis without protective lotions or oils. There is such a thing as safe tanning or tanning in moderation but the government still stresses that tanning has been linked to skin cancer. Because of this the government has decided to tax indoor tanning and discourage people from tanning. But it is time to realize that this is out of control.Taxing people for tanning is just a step away from taxing people to get their hair cut or taxing people who get facials, or taxing people who have massages. Taxes do serve a useful purpose but things are starting to go a bit far. When every service starts to be taxed then people will find alternatives to these services like tanning outside or even doing under the table tanning. People will always find a way around these taxes and in the end the government will loose money and the trust of the people. People who work hard and have jobs might start spending more on taxes then on the products and services themselves. Where is this tanning tax money going? This is a question that people need to think about.

John Kerry Banned from Iran has no plans to receive him.Iran's attitude toward the proposed visit by Senator John Kerry is a little curious. In times past, Iran welcomed diplomatic free lancers, especially if they could be used to embarrass the United States. Ramsey Clark, the uber left wing former Attorney General, flew to Tehran during the middle of the Iranian hostage crisis and participated in something called a "Crimes of America" show trial. It is likely that the Iranians have concluded that John Kerry was not, contrary to appearances, free lancing, but was serving as a clandestine emissary from the Obama Administration. The Iranians have concluded, quite rightly, that Obama is weak and that there is no point in talking to him or any emissary representing him.If President Obama is paying attention, and there is reason to wonder if he is, then he would have to conclude that the time for quiet diplomacy concerning Iran has passed, if it really ever was there to begin with. The time has come for sterner measures. But which measures, one might ask. Obama is likely to try economic sanctions against Iran, though those tend to act slowly unless vigorously enforced, which is unlikely. Economic sanctions alone would likely act too slowly to affect Iran's drive for a nuclear arsenal.Stepping up clandestine and open support of the Iranian protestors would be a good idea. It is entirely possible that the protests would reach critical mass, overthrowing the Iranian theocracy, and establishing a new, more friendly government.Other options include an embargo of refined gasoline, which Iran, though an oil exporting country, must import and air strikes against Iranian nuclear and other military sites.
